Web Design Trends

Flat Design
Much of the content we consume today on the web is on mobile devices with small screens. Clutter can be overwhelming, so simplicity is golden. Fancy user interfaces with lots of design elements can be unwieldy and, since we engage in so much audio, video and text on our devices, getting those interfaces out of the way can be a welcome relief. Another benefit of flat, minimal design is that it boosts performance by reducing page weight and loading time. But flat design is unforgiving. If done poorly, it will confuse users and make it harder to find what’s most important on a page.

Responsive Design
Responsive web design, or designing a site to adjust to the device and screen it’s being viewed on, has been around for a while, but many site owners haven’t yet taken advantage. Since studies show that visits from mobile devices now account for at least 30% of all website traffic, it’s becoming more and more important to make your site more responsive to users across all different platforms and devices. But, again, it’s not about just squishing the content down to make it fit on a smaller screen. It’s about transforming your website to get your message across effectively. What works on a desktop may not work on mobile, even if you can make it all fit.

Continuous Scrolling
Also called “infinite scrolling,” this technique loads content continuously as the user scrolls down the page, eliminating the need to click from page to page. Twitter made it popular, but it may be a nuisance to visitors on your ecommerce site, for example, if everything is presented on one never-ending page with no sorting or filtering options to isolate the products they want. Most web users don’t mind clicking links (e.g., “next page”) if the click leads them closer to their goal. Continuous scrolling may overload them with too many choices and they may click nothing at all.

Parallax Scrolling
This technique became popular with video games. It presents the webpage as multiple layers. The background layer moves at a different speed than the rest of the page (or not at all), creating a dynamic visual effect. You can wow visitors and guide them through your site with a visual story. The downsides are that most parallax websites have only one long page with no internal page linking. This can be detrimental to SEO and cause slow load times that can quickly chase away visitors.
